People who come in for consults often want to know what they can expect after getting aqua liposuction. Most people experience a pretty easy recovery and are back to work within 48 hours. As long as you follow our list of 4 important tips to ensure a safe and smooth recovery from your aqua liposuction.
1. Get Reliable Assistance After Your Aqua Liposuction
First of all, since we give you something for pain ahead of time and something post-surgery to relax, you should not plan to drive yourself home. It is recommended to have a responsible adult with you the day of surgery and for you not to make any important decisions for 24 hours after surgery. Obviously do not drive or operate hazardous machinery either.
2. Resume Diet and Exercise After Liposuction
Resume your usual diet immediately. Drink adequate amounts of water to prevent dehydration. Avoid alcoholic beverages for 48 hours after surgery as alcohol can make bleeding and bruising worse.
Late during the first day or evening after the surgery you are welcome to take a short walk if desired. The day after liposuction surgery, you may feel well enough to drive your car and engage in light to moderate physical activities
You may carefully resume exercise and vigorous physical activity 2-4 days after surgery. It is suggested that you begin with 25% of your normal workout then increase your activity daily as tolerated. Most people can return to a desk job within 2 days after surgery although one must expect to be sore and easily fatigued for several days.
Sometimes the second day is worse than the first day after surgery!
3. Wearing & Removing Post-Surgery Liposuction Garments
You will have a post-op compression garment placed on top of your bandage prior to leaving the medical spa. This bandage will be taken off 24 hours after surgery. After the liposuction, this garment is to be worn to hold the pads in place and to provide mild compression that encourages the drainage of the blood tinged anesthetic solution that will come out of your body. The morning after surgery, when the garment is removed prior to your first shower, you may experience a brief sensation of dizziness. Simply sit or lie down until it passes.
Take the bandage off slowly in the shower, preferably with help. If it is taken off to quickly, it will pull the skin off and you will get a tape burn on the skin. This bandage is not replaced after it is removed.
4. Draining and Cleaning The Incisions After Liposuction
You should expect a certain amount of blood tinged anesthetic solution to drain from the small incisions during the first 24-48 hours. The more drainage there is, the less bruising and swelling there will be. In our office we try to squeeze as much of the drainage out prior to placing the bandage on, so you don’t have to deal with too much of it. If you drain through the bandages in the first 24 hours, do not remove the compression bandages; place some extra pads between the garment and the bandage. It is important to remember not to remove this bandage too early.
Keep the incisions clean and dry. Shower once or twice daily. First wash your hands and then wash the incisions gently with soap and water. Afterwards, gently dry the incisions with a clean towel. Next, apply antibiotic ointment to the incisions and place an absorbent dressing over any sites that are still draining. If they have stopped draining they do not need to be covered any longer.
